Hundreds of spherical boulders are strewn across Koekohe beach in Moeraki. These unusual boulders were formed 65 million years ago in a similar way to the way pearls are formed. For the best view check them out at low tide! If you're lucky you'll also catch a glimpse of the yellow eyed penguins and seals that occupy the same beach.
Identical boulders can also be found on the beaches, in the cliffs, and beneath the surface inland at Hokiangi Harbour in the North Island, between Koutu and Kauwhare points.
