Moeraki Boulders

Hundreds of spherical boulders are strewn across Koekohe beach in Moeraki. These unusual boulders were formed 65 million years ago in a similar way to the way pearls are formed. For the best view check them out at low tide! If you're lucky you'll also catch a glimpse of the yellow eyed penguins and seals that occupy the same beach.

Colossal Squid

New Zealand has the  has the only Colossal Squid on display in the world. It's humongous, nearly 1000 pounds (450 kilograms), has massive tentacle hooks that rotate, eyes the size of soccer balls, 3 hearts and a beak! Terrifying.

Colossal Squid Exhibition is on at Te Papa Museum in Wellington until the end of this year.

New Zealand Recipes

I found these FREE recipe cards at Countdown Supermarket. I love to collect recipes and recipe ideas when I'm visiting another country. Cooking and baking interesting recipes you discover abroad is a great way to share your travel experience with friends and family when you get back home. They also make a great (and cheap!) gift for foodie friends. My brother who is a chef loves the strange and different recipes that I send home.

Another great way to get your hands on some Kiwi recipes is simply to ask the locals! Especially if you get a chance to speak to chatwith a Kiwi granny who will likely have some tried and true classics to share! There are also lots of great books and magazines available full of both classic and modern New Zealand Recipes.

Whitebait - Try it!

                                                                                                                                                     photo
A New Zealand delicacy, whitebait are a small (about 5 cm in length), thin, transparent fish. They have a moderate fishy taste and are eaten whole usually with egg. You can sometimes find stalls at markets selling whitebait fritters, a basic omellette made with the fish, and whitebait pattie sandwiches are quite commonly sold in fish and chips shops all over the country.

Ohau Seal Colony - Kaikoura

The seal colony is located 25 kms north of Kaikoura, right ON Hwy1 with the main carpark at Half Moon Bay. You can't miss it. Ohua is the most accesible Seal Colony in all of New Zealand. The seals are litterally right next to the road! Another 3kms north of the colony you will find Paparoa Point and the entrance to the Ohau Waterfall Track. This is another great Seal Colony location that is often missed by travellers!

Don't miss The Chasm! - Te Anau/Milford Sound

On our way back from Milford Sound we made the mistake of not stopping at The Chasm. The Chasm is located between Te Anau and Milford Sound, just past the Homer Tunnel and is a short 10 minute walk from the road. This website has great map of the drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound that shows all the sights between the two so YOU don't miss anything!

Emily Valentine Exhibition - Wanganui

I love, love, LOVE Emily Valentine. Using the feathers of the Mynah bird (and some others) Australian Emily Valentine Bullock creates Fashion, Jewellery and sculptures that question 'how we sub-consciously classify animals – pet or pest, valued or worthless, beautiful or plain and why'. Her work is beautiful and unique and worth seeing! The Emily Valentine - Feather Fancy Exhibition is on now at The Sarjeant Gallery in Wanganui until March 20th, 2011.
